Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Stench Grips Mansa’s Sacred Ghaggar River dated 17/01/2020 regarding steps for making Ghaggar river pollution free. The river originates in the State of Himachal Pradesh and ends in the State of Rajasthan. The river Ghaggar had turned into a polluted water body on account of discharge of effluents - industrial as well as municipal.

"In view of the deficiencies found with regard to functioning and inadequacy of STPs, use of treated water and waste management, further steps need to be taken expeditiously and monitored by the Committee" the NGT order said. The tribunal also directed the committee to submit a report to the the concerned Chief Secretaries and PCBs/PCC who may give their respective response to the tribunal. The response has to focus on existing STP being compliant with the norms with regard to faecal coliform, bridging of gap in terms of sewage generated and treated, secondary use of STP treated water, bridging of gap in terms of solid waste generated and treated, remediation of legacy waste sites.
