Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Mohammed Nayeem Pasha & Others Vs The State of Telangana & Others dated 05/04/2019 regarding pollution of river Musi at Hyderabad (Telangana). The river is contaminated due to disposal of industrial and domestic sewage effluents into it. An affidavit filed by the Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, State of Telangana on 10th September, 2018 states that total sewerage generated is about 1400 mld which is being discharged in the catchment area of Musi river from either of the banks through nalas.

NGT orders that BOD will not be the sole criteria to determine whether a particular river stretch is a polluted one and other parameters including Faecal Coliform (FC) bacteria will also be the criteria for classifying a stretch as polluted or otherwise. Further CPCB has been asked to devise within two weeks a mechanism for classification wherein two criteria pollutants that is BOD and FC shall henceforth be the basis of classification in priority classes. CPCB and Telangana Pollution Control Board has been directed to carry out a quick hygienic survey of the River by engaging Professor Suman Kapuro of BITS-Pilani and submit a report for river Musi and any other clean river in the state falling in the category of ‘A’ and or ‘B' before 31stJuly, 2019.
