Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Tribunal on its own Motion Vs Union of India & Others dated 20/11/2018 regarding pollution being caused to river Churni in Ranaghat Municipality, Nadia District, West Bengal. Affidavit filed by Principal Secretary, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department, Government of West Bengal states that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the project dealing with the low cost waste water treatment for mitigating the pollution to river Churni would cost Rs. 70,50,00,000/-. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) envisages setting up of “Sewerage Network and Allied Works” for Interception and Diversion (I & D) of existing drainage channel which is presently being discharged into river Churni directly as well as for the purpose of rehabilitation of the existing STPs.

National Green Tribunal expresses its dissatisfaction at the pace of work being undertaken specifically in respect of establishment of the sewerage network and allied works including establishment of STP. NGT directs that the work of the project should start within 18/01/2019 and in the meanwhile the Ranaghat Municipality shall accelerate the pace of the work initiated by them for dealing with the municipal waste.
