Order of the Supreme Court of India regarding bauxite mining near Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary, Kolhapur, Maharashtra

Order of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of In Re: T. N. Godavarman Thirumulpad Vs Union of India & Others dated 25/10/2018 regarding bauxite mining near Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary, Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

A communication from the 47th Meeting of the Standing Commitee of the National Board of Wildlife dated 08/02/2018 suggests that Durgmanwadi bauxite mining has been in operation by M/s Hindalco since 1994 without obtaining any clearance from the National Board of Wildlife. Further there are other units of M/s Hindalco which are located at different distances and are also functioning without obtaining wildlife clearance from the National Board of Wildlife.

Supreme Court directs the presence of the Chief Secretary of the State of Maharashtra to explain wy illegal mining is continuing despite the orders passed by the Court. Apex Court also directs the Chief Secretary to ensure that illegal mining in areas where there is no clearance given by the National Board of Wildlife should be stopped with immediate effect.
