Antibiotic Resistance in Poultry Environment: Spread of Resistance from Poultry Farm to Agricultural Field

Antibiotic Resistance in Poultry Environment: Spread of Resistance from Poultry Farm to Agricultural Field In 2014, CSE and Pollution Monitoring Laboratory, in their report ‘Antibiotic Residues in Chicken Meat’ highlighted the widespread use of antibiotics in intensive chicken farming in the country, revealing abuse of this ‘public-health good’. Subsequently, CSE was asked at several fora, directly or otherwise: What is the connecting link? How is antibiotic use in chickens leading to increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria? This new study establishes that poultry environment is a reservoir of multidrug resistant bacteria and points towards the role of litter in spreading ABR in the environment.
