  • 30/08/2006

More than 40,000 people were evacuated as typhoon Prapiroon hit southern China on August 3, pounding an already battered area with more heavy rains and winds. Till reports last received, at least six people have been killed. Prapiroon made landfall along a stretch of coastal Guangdong province, including the cities of Yangjiang and Dianbai, said the state news agency. Low-lying areas of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan islands have been the worst affected in the storm.

The region has been hard hit by typhoons this season. Earlier, on July 26 typhoon Kaemi had hit southern China killing at least 35 people and evacuating more than 500,000 residents in Fujian province.
