Vanilla world

  • 14/08/2007

Although there are 110 varieties of vanilla, only three varieties are grown on a commercial scale. These include Vanilla planifolia also known as the bourbon variety, Vanilla Tahitensis or the Tahitian variety and Vanilla pompona. Vanilla plainifolia is widely regarded as the most commercially important variety due to its strong vanillin content. The Tahitian variety due to its fruity smell has a very niche market while the pompona variety is used mainly in perfumery.
