TRINIDAD

In a strange incident, a dozen pilot whales died on a Trinidad beach while another 14, that had been washed ashore, were returned safely to the Atlantic Ocean. According to a Reuters news report, the whales were first spotted by an aircraft flying over the Manzanilla beach.

As to what had caused the whales, both adults and juveniles, to be washed ashore remains a mystery, said Dara Healy, communications officer of the Environmental Management Authority ( ema ).

Experts from the Caribbean Stranding Network in Puerto Rico transported some of the dead whales to a Port of Spain laboratory for further analysis.

The ema has said that the beach will be patrolled over the next 24 hours to ensure that the whales do not return to the shore.
