In response to the direction passed by the environment bench of the Calcutta High Court, the director of the Union ministry for environment and forests, Manotosh Sengupta, submitted a report stating what steps have been taken in respect of arsenic contamination of the groundwater supply in eight districts of West Bengal. The report states that the Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission in association with the West Bengal government launched several investigative and remedial measures for supply of safe drinking water to the districts. The Mission covered a population of 487,000 and provided 1,004 spot sources and 26 large diameter wells and five piped water schemes.
