No LPG for vehicles
the Delhi government has banned the use of vehicles that have installed Liquefied Petroleum Gas (lpg) cylinders to meet their fuel needs. Despite Parliament giving clearance for the use of lpg as an alternative fuel, the ban has been imposed since the emission norms for these vehicles have not been decided and standard kit to be used in these vehicles has not been approved by the Union government. "The lpg gas cylinders are for cooking purposes and are not to be used as fuel for vehicles. If we catch any such vehicle, we will impound it,' said Parvez Hashmi, Delhi's transport minister.
The emission norms have to be fixed by a scientific research body, as was done in the case of vehicles running on Compressed Natural Gas (cng), Hashmi said. lpg kits are dangerous as most of them do not have a legal sanction, he added. "We took this decision after the Union surface transport minister said that the Union government needs more time to issue specifications on the use of this gas in motor vehicles, Hashmi said.
