Autonomy for Delhi zoo

Autonomy for Delhi zoo the National Zoological Park in Delhi may soon be granted autonomy. The Union ministry of forest and environment will soon form a committee which will look into the modalities of the process. "A zoo might be a low priority area for the government. But an autonomous body will ensure better functioning and accountability of staff in park,' said S C Sharma, director, wildlife preservation. He said autonomy of the zoo will cut procedural delays, ensure constant monitoring and quick decision-making in the administration.

However, Sharma ruled out privatisation of the zoo. The committee will work out modalities of opening membership to the zoo for all sections of the society. The autonomy of the park will mean souvenir shops, more restaurants, better maintenance of the lawns, which in turn is expected to increase the revenue and insure better incentives for the staff.

At present the funds are allotted to the zoo on the year-to-year basis. According to Sharma, the autonomy will also increase the tenure of the director and his responsibilities.
