No to marble mining

"MARBLE, no; water, yes," shouted demonstrators at a recent rally in Kathmandu, demanding an immediate end to quarrying in the Godavari hills of the picturesque valley in which the capital nestles.

The rally organised by Kathmandu Upatyaka Batabaran Bachau Andolan, warned the agitation would intensify if the government did not stop quarrying immediately. Ironically, users of marble were amongst the more prominent in the rally, says Jan Sharma in a Panos Features report from Kathmandu.

The rally organisers say blasting and quarrying not only harms the valley environment but also causes pollution, endangering 570 kinds of flowers, 300 species of butterflies and 254 types of birds.
