Theme paper on transboundary waters: World Water Day 2009

International World Water Day is held annually on 22nd March as recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). It serves as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. In 2009, special focus is on transboundary waters. The theme paper has attempted to comprehensively cover several aspects related to transboundary waters management starting from generalized, global principles for the management of international rivers, most notably through the 1997 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses. The paper also highlights the Indian transboundary waters management issues with neighboring countries.
