PUERTO RICO

A dead male goosebeak whale has been found on the shores of Vieques island. The Caribbean Stranding Network is studying whether there is any correlation between the death of the goosebeak whale and of other Caribbean whales and the bomb training programme of the us navy being conducted on the island.

"Goosebeak whales are particularly sensitive to low frequency sounds,' says Antonio Mignucci, scientific coordinator, the Caribbean Stranding Network and a oceanography professor. The same species was recently involved in a mass stranding of whales and dolphins in the Bahamas, which has been linked to us navy practices nearby. "We are closely investigating the events and causes of death,' said Mignucci.
