Return to haven

  • 14/05/1998

Return to haven a quiet serene house, nestling in a green expanse, surrounded by heavily-laden fruit trees. Nothing new at the outset, for acres of the countryside is sprinkled with such picturesque villages and houses. However, village folk move out of these regularly attracted by the glamour of city life. On the other hand some urbanites choose the former, forsaking a materially comfortable but not-so-healthy lifestyle in the proverbial concrete jungle to chalk out their own destiny in harmony with nature.

This is the story of Dhirendra and Smita, a couple that gave up lucrative careers in Ahmedabad, the industrial heartland of Gujarat. About 15 years ago, they moved away from Ahmedabad to Sakawa, a small village in the Rajpipla Taluka of district Bharuch, about 85 km from Vadodara, to start their experiment in a sustainable and self-dependant lifestyle. Today, the proud parents of two young boys have the time to sit back and reflect, and to socialise. Very sparingly though, for the entire day is take up by farm work
