ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES

Pakistan's minister for environment, local government and rural development, Omar Asghar Khan has set up three committees to develop a long-term vision on environment. The committees will also address a priority programme for clean air, clean water, disposal of solid wastes, development and promotion of resources, including solar energy, forestry and wildlife management plans. Khan announced that various initiatives were being taken by the ministry to develop an action plan on environmental issues. He also said the ministry of environment was working with other federal ministries/divisions to devise strategies to meet the challenges related to environmental issues in the World Trade Organisation (WTO). To deal with the vital issues of introduction of clean fuels and promulgation of Plant Breeders Rights Ordinance, Pakistan's environment ministry have started work in collaboration with the ministries of commerce, petroleum and natural resources, and food, agriculture and livestock.
