Cleaning China

In an attempt to combat pollution in Beijing, the city municipal government has decided to issue special environmental protection licences for vehicles that meet the emission standards set by the government. Those vehicles which do not meet these standards would be seized and destroyed. The government has also decided to extend the areas where trucks are prohibited to run during daytime.

In another case, the Chinese government has ordered the closure of 143 factories in the Taihu Lake Valley because of non-compliance with pollution-control measures. A spokesperson for the government said that all factories with a daily waste water emission of 100 tonnes will have to meet these standards. Latest statistics reveal that 878 factories, or nearly 85 per cent of the 1,035 factories in the region, have installed water treatment facilities to meet the standards.
