Western Ghats Task Force Chairperson Ananth Hegde Ashisara said on Thursday that radiation from the Kaiga nuclear plant in Uttara Kannada district was causing cancer among residents of nearby villages. He told a press conference that members of the Task Force had visited villages in a radius of 15 km of the plant and interacted with the residents. PUNE: The Dhule-based solar power plant which is expected to generate 150 MW power is likely to be made operational from March 20 this year. The first phase would add 50 MW power to the state grid, said government officials. The solar panels spread over 350 hectares of barren land will have 'thin film' and 'crystalline' technology based photovoltaic cells. The aim is to maximize the output from the solar panels. The efficiency of the power panels is 20% of the total heat absorption. The project was delayed by one year because of the dispute between the state revenue and forest department. Later the dispute was resolved and the project was cleared.
The state Cabinet today gave its approval to introducing the Punjab State Cancer and Drug Addiction Treatment Infra Structure Fund Bill, 2013, in the coming Budget session of the state assembly. The Bill aims at creating a special fund for setting up infrastructure, including equipment, in selected hospitals for treatment of cancer as well as drug addiction. To facilitate NRIs (non-resident Indians) in getting their properties vacated, the Cabinet gave the go-ahead to the Punjab Rent (Amendment) Bill, 2013. The Bill will be tabled in the assembly during the Budget session. All properties on rent under an agreement will come under the purview of this new law.
