The hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater in Mehadrigedda watershed of Visakhapatnam district have been studied.
Following the success of watershed development operation research project Sukhomajri in Haryana, large number of water harvesting dams were constructed in the Shivaliks region of north India. The reservoirs of a number of these earthen dams got silted due to fragile geological strata, inadequate vegetation cover in the catchment areas, continued biotic interference and lack of community participation in building social pressure against grazing and illicit felling.
The World Bank (WB) would provide 25 million dollar for Balochistan Small-Scale Irrigation Project (BSSIP), which will support efforts by the Government of Balochistan (GoB) to improve the management of scarce water resources in the Pishin Lora Basin (PLB) by reducing the overall impact of the present water crisis. The project's objectives include increasing surface water availability and reducing groundwater depletion, increasing water productivity through a combination of engineering, management and agricultural measures and expanding local capacity and participation of farmers to implement similar schemes and formulate plans for sustainable water resources development and watershed management. The project will focus on the PLB in the northern part of Balochistan. The project will follow three components that include partial restoration of the water storage capacity, developing small-scale irrigation schemes in the PLB and strengthening and building the capacity of the Irrigation and Power Department, water management institutions, and farmer and community organisations, and implementing studies. The project can contribute to strengthening provincial water management capabilities. The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors approved the credit with maturity of 35 years and 10 years grace period. Copyright Business Recorder, 2008
The National Water Award and the Bhoomijal Samvardhan Puraskar-2007 were awarded by the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India in September 2007 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

This new guidelines for watershed development projects broadly indicate a new framework for the next generation watershed programme. It was asserted that these guidelines coupled with the flexibilities inherent in them would provide a helpful framework for the design, management and implementation of all watershed development projects in the country.

But in less than a decade it turned itself around into one of the most prosperous villages of the country. There was no magic wand, just common sense. It used funds from government schemes, to regenerate its natural resources--forests, watershed and soil--led by a strong village body. It had a role model in the district--Ralegan Siddhi, the village Anna Hazare turned around. Now Hiware Bazar is in turn an exemplar for the whole of Ahmednagar district, where others have used the same scheme to conserve and prosper. NEHA SAKHUJA travelled the district and came back with an inspirational story.

Poverty remains to be the most important development issue facing India with an estimated 301.72 million Indians (27.5 percent) living below the poverty line in 2004-2005. In 1975, Ralegan Siddhi was just another drought prone, poverty stricken village, but it has had much success in poverty reduction since then.
This guidelines broadly indicate a fresh framework for the next generation watershed programmes.
