Thrikkakara municipality has passed a surplus budget of Rs.12.09 crore for the 2012-13 fiscal here on Thursday. The budget presented by vice-chairperson Shereena Shukoor envisages an income of Rs.87.79 crore against an expense of Rs.71.20 crore. The budget earmarks Rs.1 crore to buy land for solid waste treatment in the municipality faced with the task of handling piled up garbage. It further sets apart Rs.25 lakh each for spreading earth over the dumped waste and for other ancillary expenses, including wages of workers.
The Kottayam Municipality has provided thrust towards strengthening the distribution of drinking water and the waste management system through its budget estimate for 2012-13. The World Bank has approved a funding of $109 million (Rs.545 crore) for a new agricultural competitiveness project in Rajasthan set to improve farm productivity through sustainable and efficient use of water resources. The Centre on Monday revised the wage rate under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and has decided to amend the Act to remove the existing disparity in minimum wage even as the matter is scheduled to come up before the Supreme Court on April 9. The revision in the wage rate indexed to the Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labour (CPIAL) will come into effect on April 1 and will prevail for the year 2012-13. It varies from State to State depending on the specific prevailing CPIAL and will entail an additional burden of Rs.472 crore on the Central exchequer.
The Maharashtra government is set to implement some harsh monetary steps from next month, as finance minister Ajit Pawar envisaged a raise in tax rates across sectors in the 2012-13 budget presented on Monday. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has fined 59 industrial units for unlawfully storing and disposing large quantities of hazardous waste on their premises. The industries have been asked by MPCB to pay the fine (amount not specified) and have been directed to send the hazardous waste to common treatment facilities, the 2011-12 Economic Survey of the state, which was tabled in the ongoing Budget session of the legislature, said.
